Based on phylogenetic classification using the SILVA 16S rRNA gene database 18, 19, most reads were classified as Proteobacteria (97.3% and 96.3% of OTUs in V. mandarinia and V. simillima, respectively; Fig. 1b), and Firmicutes was the second most abundant phylum (2.28% and 2.83% in V. mandarinia and V. simillima, respectively; Fig. 1b). Other phyla comprised less than 1% of the reads for each.
